Mikel Arteta signs new Arsenal contract after Premier League title success | OneFootball

Mikel Arteta has agreed a new contract that will keep him at Arsenal for the foreseeable future (BBC).

His previous deal was due to expire at the end of the season, but the Spaniard had been in talks with the club for several months.

The exact length of Arteta’s new contract has not been confirmed, but it is expected to keep him at Arsenal for at least a decade since he took charge in December 2019.

The new deal includes a significant pay rise. Arteta currently earns around £10 million a year, plus a further £5m in bonuses.

Arteta’s future at Arsenal was never in doubt. He made his intentions clear last week when he reassured Arsenal supporters that they had no reason to worry about his future.

His decision to remain at Arsenal is hardly surprising given the progress made under his leadership.

He has overseen a major transformation at the Emirates Stadium, turning the Gunners into a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League and European football.

The Spaniard led Arsenal to their first league title in two decades last season and was also one penalty kick away from leading the club to their first Champions League title.

Arteta now wants to build on what he has already achieved rather than start a new chapter elsewhere.

He has previously been linked with some of the biggest jobs in world football, including Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. However, Arsenal have held on to the Spaniard.

Arsenal will hope Arteta can build a dynasty and establish the club at the pinnacle of English football for the foreseeable future.

With the Premier League title now in the coffers, the Gunners will hope they can go one step further in the Champions League after their heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat in the final last season.
