Mikel Oyarzabal struck twice as Spain beat Austria 3-0 in Los Angeles to reach the last 16, scoring the opener and the third and marking his brace with a baby-bump celebration for his expected child.
According to Diario Vasco, the forward’s journey began with Real Sociedad’s 2015 camp in Austria when he was 18, and at 29 he now has two Copas with La Real, six European qualifications, and a European title with Spain.
Under close attention early on, he forced a smart low save from Schlager on 32 minutes. Four minutes later he timed his run to the edge of offside to touch in Cucurella’s low cross, a finish reminiscent of his Euro 2024 final winner against England.
After the break his decoy movement cleared the area for Pedro Porro to make it 2-0. He then swept in first time with his right from another Cucurella delivery for 3-0, echoing that Berlin pattern.
Oyarzabal has four World Cup goals, 13 for Spain this season, and 29 overall, drawing level with Hierro. Spain’s progress means the Real Sociedad captain will report later for pre-season. Their next match is on Monday 6 July.
