Mikel Oyarzabal has set a personal best for a league season after scoring twice in Real Sociedad’s 3-3 draw at Rayo Vallecano. One came from the spot, taking the captain to 14 league goals, past the 13 he managed in 2017-18 and 2018-19. He is now two shy of Lamine Yamal on 16, who may struggle to play again this season because of injury.

According to AS, Oyarzabal has joined Ferran Torres in second on 14, three clear of Toni Martínez of Deportivo Alavés and Borja Iglesias of Getafe, both on 11.

This campaign has brought landmark numbers for the forward. He became Anoeta’s all-time top scorer with 69 goals, edging past Darko Kovacevic’s tally by one. His 132 career goals also place him second on Real Sociedad’s historic list, behind Jesús Mari Satrústegui on 163.

Oyarzabal’s form is decisive, with goals in each of the last three league matches. He also found the net in the Copa del Rey final won at La Cartuja against Atlético de Madrid.

With five league games remaining, he has a chance to chase top spot among Spanish scorers. He will try to sustain his accuracy in this final sprint and carry the momentum into the next World Cup, where he will be one of the key figures in Luis de la Fuente’s national team.
