Mikel Oyarzabal has barely paused since lifting the World Cup in a final against Argentina, returning to Real Sociedad after just three weeks off and featuring in every outing. As reported by AS, he has carried the side’s load throughout this start to the campaign.
In the opening weeks, head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo said the captain was not yet ready to play 90 minutes. He initially rationed Oyarzabal’s time, then the forward’s response saw him complete full matches.
That workload has begun to show as accumulated fatigue at the start of the season. Matarazzo has again been withdrawing him in second halves of recent games to limit the strain on an indispensable player who has just surpassed 444 official appearances for the club he has served throughout his career.
There was some expectation that the national coach might grant him recovery time in this first break, yet Luis de la Fuente named him in Spain’s latest squad. Spain face two demanding tests against England and Croatia, where the coach from La Rioja views the forward as central and fully trusted.
The No 10 is therefore on a schedule without respite before travelling to Las Rozas. For Real Sociedad and for Spain, Mikel Oyarzabal is playing it all.
