Milan were jeered off the pitch on the night of their 125th anniversary, with pointed insults aimed at the players, but also owner Gerry Cardinale. ‘We are not American.’

The Rossoneri had started the evening with a grand celebration of 125 years since the club was founded in December 1899, as a parade of legends walked onto the pitch holding their many trophies.

However, there were already signs of trouble when a banner appeared in the Curva Sud: ‘We honour our champions, those symbols of a Milan that no longer exists.’

At the final whistle of a dismal 0-0 draw with Genoa, the jeers rained down on the squad, coach Paulo Fonseca, but primarily towards the club patron Gerry Cardinale, who was not present.

Along with the usual ‘you don’t deserve us’ and ‘we are fed up’ chants, there was one aimed pointedly at Cardinale.

‘We are not American’ was the repeated chant as the players looked embarrassed.

The Rossoneri have a game in hand, but are still 14 points off Serie A leaders Atalanta.

Worse still, they are now two points behind Bologna, who have also played 15 rounds.
