Millwall academy graduate Danny McNamara admitted that he was destined to perform well against West Ham in Charlton's win on Saturday

Millwall fans were left delighted on Saturday after their perfect performance against Norwich City was backed up by West Ham United losing their first home game back in the Championship to Charlton Athletic later that day.

The Lions and the Addicks are two of three sides to have picked up maximum points in the opening two games of the season, while the Hammers have struggled out of the traps, picking up just one point out of a possible six.

One man who will love the way that the new season has started is Danny McNamara, who spent 12 years at the Den coming through the academy before leaving for Charlton in the summer at the expiry of his contract.

And the 27-year-old relished being able to spoil the party in front of a record Championship attendance against Millwall's bitter rivals on Saturday.

McNamara has been an important part of Charlton's three consecutive wins in all competitions to start the new season, starting all three. In comparison, he made just six starts in his final year at Millwall.

Coming through at the Den, though, the 27-year-old knew that he had to put in a good performance against his former club's bitter rivals, and his admission after the game would leave those associated with his former club with smiles on their faces.

"It was a great performance," McNamara told Charlton's in-house media. "When the fixtures come out, you look at these games, and you can't wait to play them. To play them so early on in the season was really good for us.

"It was a game I was destined to play well in and try and get a result in, so yeah, what a win."

The former Millwall man pitched in with plenty of good defensive contributions, and came away with a yellow card, too, as probably expected against the Hammers. He's endearing himself to his new club well, which is impressive, given the rivalry between his current and former side, too.

"I said that on my first day, as soon as the fans see me play, I hope they like me, get to know me, and you can see in the support today in their numbers, it was unbelievable," he continued. "They were loud all game. Thanks for the support, and long may it continue."

Millwall are revelling in the early gap they have between themselves and their rivals, and also reacted positively to the comments their former player made after beating West Ham.

“"A game that I was destined to play well in” Take the man out of Millwall etc etc," one Lions fan commented.

"He's a good lad, Danny Mac....and don't forget...he was educated here first," another added, while one Millwall fan branded him, "Always a lion Danny Mac," and a thrid commented, "Love Danny Mac. Proper lad."

Despite playing a minimal role in Alex Neil's side last season, the reaction to him leaving in the summer was mainly wishing him all the best in the future, showing how respected he was amongst Millwall fans.

A great performance against the Hammers has only gone and stoked that good feeling even further.

McNamara is arguably one of the happiest players in the Championship right now, given the trajectories of both his former and current clubs to begin the campaign.

Millwall have won their opening two league games for the first time since the 2014/15 term, keeping clean sheets in both, too, showing that their incredible campaign last season wasn't a flash in the pan and that they're ready to go one better than third place.

Meanwhile, McNamara's current side probably can't believe their electric start to their second season back in the second tier.

A lot was riding on how the formation change from a back-five to a back-four would impact the performances. It turns out, quite a lot, with Tyrese Campbell especially benefiting from Nathan Jones reintegrating wingers into his lineup, scoring three in three to open the season.
