Millwall, managed by former Sunderland boss Alex Neil, are the latest Championship side to show interest in a January loan for goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, according to Patreon.
The Black Cats academy graduate was pivotal in last season’s promotion to the Premier League, but he has seen minutes dry up after Robin Roefs took the gloves. His only outing this campaign came in August, a Carabao Cup defeat to Huddersfield Town.
Speculation around his future has built in recent weeks. Southampton were linked earlier this month before signing Bayern Munich goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, while Leicester City have also been mentioned.
Millwall sit fifth in the Championship and Neil is understood to admire Patterson from their time together on Wearside. He is thought to be keen on a temporary addition to aid a promotion bid.
Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris said any exit would depend on recruiting a replacement of the right level this month. He added that conversations remain open with players short of game time and that Patterson is considered important even when not playing.
Le Bris also praised Roefs after the third round shootout at Everton, where the Dutchman saved three consecutive penalties. He said the youngster is improving, eager to learn and already helping the team.
