The MLS meeting between San José Earthquakes and Minnesota United was briefly halted after a baby wandered on to the pitch. The visitors won 5-1.
During stoppage time the referee paused play for a few seconds, the reason initially unclear on the broadcast, according to Le Progres.
A commentator then pointed out the child on the field and cameras showed a smiling infant being carried away by a steward. The commentator joked it was better than a raccoon and wondered how the toddler had reached the edge of the penalty area, with parents unable to step on to retrieve him.
The circumstances of the intrusion remain unclear, though the clip amused viewers on social media. The emphatic scoreline was likened online to taking money from a baby.
After the game, Minnesota head coach Cameron Knowles said the bench had heard a noise and were trying to work out what it was, before quipping that it felt very early in life for a lifetime stadium ban.
