Match winner Mo Kudus immediately shone the spotlight on Mathys Tel after our 2-1 win against Leeds United on Saturday.
Mo drilled home a fine winner at Elland Road – his first goal for us – and was a constant threat down our right, typically relishing what, at times, and as expected, was a physical battle against a team unbeaten on home soil in league action for over a year.
He also provided the assist for Mathys’ opener in the first half, feeding in the pacy French international in the right channel after Rodri Bentancur won possession. Mathys did the rest, driving into the box and firing home via a slight deflection.
It was his first goal this season, indeed, since April, and the spotlight had been on the youngster both after being left out of our UEL squad, how he would react, and in his role as the central striker – Thomas Frank spoke beforehand that he felt he was ‘what we need for the game today’ and after the final whistle, highlighted his progression in games against West Ham and Doncaster and now his contribution to a big, big win.
Mo was quick to add to the plaudits. “I want to give big praise to Mathys because I think it's been a tough month, but how he carries himself, training… he's a top, top professional,” he said. “I think you can see today when he got his chance, he was there.
“It shows how professional he is, the way he composes himself, manages himself, trains. He's still young and with this mentality, it's really going to help him go far. I hope that this first goal he has scored is going to open more doors for even better games and more goals coming ahead. I'm really, really proud of him today.”
