Luka Modric has declared his love for life at AC Milan and expressed a desire to win a trophy with the club, as the Croatian legend makes himself available for Sunday’s crucial Champions League qualifier against Cagliari despite recovering from a fractured cheekbone.

Speaking to Sport Mediaset, via TuttoMercatoWeb, the 40-year-old, whose contract expires on June 30, was careful to deflect questions about his future while making clear his attachment to the club runs deep.

“I am very happy in Milan but the most important thing now is the match against Cagliari on Sunday and Champions League qualification,” he said. “For the rest, we will see. I have good relationships with the club, the management and the coach.”

Modric hints at Milan stay as he praises city life and declares trophy ambition

On his desire to contribute beyond this season, Modric was telling.

“When I chose Milan it was to help and try to win,” he said. “This year it has not happened, but it is clear that I would like to win a trophy with Milan.”

The comment will fuel hope among the Rossoneri fanbase that the Croatian could yet commit to another year, particularly given his evident enjoyment of life in the city.

“It is a spectacular city, I love it,” he said. “The food is spectacular, pasta is my favourite dish, and it is close to the mountains, the sea and the lake.”

On his physical condition, Modric was upbeat. “I feel good and I am improving physically, I have returned to training with the squad and I am already getting used to the mask,” he said. “I am ready to come back. I have a great desire to play again.”

Asked whether he could become a future assistant to Allegri, Modric was non-committal but warm. “I have a good relationship with him but we have not talked about that,” he said. “I still love playing football. When I retire I will think about it, and when will I retire? I do not know, let’s see after Sunday.”
