Nahuel Molina explains why he came back to Serie A for Roma after his Atletico Madrid experience and Udinese. ‘The team is strong and has done good things in recent years.’

The 28-year-old plays as a right-back or wing-back, which is the role he will most likely take in Gian Piero Gasperini’s side this season.

He made the transfer to the Stadio Olimpico for €13m plus up to a further €4m in various performance-related bonuses, signing a contract to June 2030.

“I’ve been made to feel at home from the very first moment, and I am very happy,” Molina told the official club website.

“Both the coach and club strongly wanted me to come to Roma, so I want to thank them. I hope to be ready to train and help the team straight away.

“I chose Roma because I think it’s a huge club, with such passionate fans. The team is strong and has done good things in recent years, so all this took me here. I’m very happy.”

Molina is certainly no stranger to Italian football, as he played for Udinese from 2020 until 2022, when making the €20m transfer to Atletico Madrid.

He is also reunited with fellow Argentina internationals like Paulo Dybala and Santiago Castro.

“I already spoke to some of my teammates and they are among the reasons that took me to choose Roma, because I know them well. I think that will help me settle in quickly, so I’m really enthusiastic.”

Molina has chosen the Number 20 jersey at Roma, which is a new pick not seen before in his career.

“I wanted something new, a new beginning, a new challenge. I think a change can help motivate you,” he added.

“I spoke to my wife before coming here, because we both love the city and visited it many times. I fell in love with Italy since the moment I arrived at Udinese, so I’m really pleased to be able to enjoy Rome with the Romans.

“There were so many fans waiting for me at the airport, I can picture them now at the Stadio Olimpico supporting the side throughout every match.”

In a curious twist of fate, Molina’s Serie A debut was for Udinese against Roma, where he scored in the 1-1 draw.

“Italian football is always very difficult, so I expect tough games and very physical ones too. I never hold back, I always try to give 100 per cent on the field, doing everything possible to help my team. Of course, Serie A is also very tactical.

“I’ve played on the right and in a three-man defence, so it doesn’t change that much for me.”

Roma are back in the Champions League after a seven-year absence, but it is common for the Argentina international to play at that level.
