Monaco consider signing defensive reinforcement

AS Monaco are considering the signing of a ‘joker’ in defence, according to a report from L’Équipe. It comes amid a change in system and a swathe of absences.

Sébastien Pocognoli’s arrival on the touchline at Monaco has seen the club move to a back-three system. However, Pocognoli’s options in this sector of the pitch are limited. The club sold Wilfried Singo over the summer, whilst Eric Dier is also currently out. Christian Mawissa made his return during Wednesday’s 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, but regardless, with just four players to pick from when all players are fit, it is a sector of the pitch that is in need of strengthening.

L’Équipe understands that Monaco could exercise the right to bring in a ‘joker’ transfer, which would allow them to sign a player from another French club outside of the transfer window. Whilst the publication has not cited any potential targets, they did add that, as per Les Monégasques’ policy, they are looking to sign a prospect in the position.
