Corse Matin reports that Juan Sartori’s public support for Sunderland has become a talking point at Monaco, with parts of the fanbase said to be irritated.
On the pitch, Monaco have lost six of their last seven matches, increasing pressure in the race for European qualification.
Off it, domestic television income is said to have fallen from around €40million to €9million across the past two seasons, prompting tighter controls, including a need to raise an additional €20million through player sales before 30 June.
Frustration has reportedly spilled over, with flares thrown during a cup tie in Orléans and criticism of a perceived lack of leadership. Attention has turned to vice presidents Ekaterina Rybolovleva and her husband, Sartori, who holds a reported 36 per cent stake in Sunderland. His social media posts, often in Sunderland colours, are said to have drawn particular ire.
In November, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Sartori attended the Superclásico in Buenos Aires, footage shared by Sartori showing Louis-Dreyfus in Sunderland colours. Boca beat River 2-0 through Exequiel Zeballos and Miguel Merentiel to go top of Group A on 26 points and secure automatic Copa Libertadores group-stage qualification. River’s poor run continued with six defeats in seven league matches.
Sartori has previously spoken about a youth-led rebuild at Sunderland and his hope of signing a Uruguayan player one day, while stressing decisions must be made at the right time.
