Monchi has said Espanyol are negotiating with CD Castellón over Álex Calatrava, with a summer transfer under discussion.

"The sporting department and coaching staff are in agreement, and so are the owners," Monchi said to La Vanguardia. "I think Manolo González's style could suit him. We are talking with Castellón to reach an agreement."

A key element is the release clause, which is understood to drop from 10 to five million euros on one July, a reduction written into his deal after Castellón did not win promotion to Primera División.

If concluded at five million, the fee would be the highest sale in CD Castellón's history, eclipsing Daijiro Chirino's move last summer when Almería paid two million.

Calatrava was one of Segunda División's standout performers in 2025/26, playing 43 matches, starting 42, and scoring 15 goals. Interest from several Spanish clubs followed, though he ultimately renewed with Castellón.

Beyond the numbers, he became Castellón's chief creative outlet, operating between the lines and delivering in decisive moments. With eight assists under Pablo Hernández, he was central to their attacking play.
