As January looms large on the footballing calendar, Liverpool fans are starting to feel the heat. With contract extensions for Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk still hanging in the balance, tension is beginning to bubble at Anfield. Peter Moore recently remarked, “Liverpool are working feverishly to tie down Salah, Trent, and Van Dijk, and progress is being made.” Yet, for a fanbase accustomed to swift action in transfer markets and beyond, this lack of definitive news feels unsettling.
Mohamed Salah has been a revelation this season, with the stats shared by the Premier League confirming just how pivotal he is. The Premier League recently crowned Salah as “the best player of the season so far,” based on fan votes. Meanwhile, a report in Goal positions him as “Number ONE in the Ballon d’Or Power Rankings.” This accolade reflects his dominance on the pitch, with his performances being described as comprising “80% of Liverpool’s success” by passionate fans online.

His contributions go far beyond goals and assists; Salah has evolved into a talismanic figure, leading Liverpool with skill, composure, and an unmatched work ethic. Losing a player of his calibre is unthinkable, and the fact that no official contract announcement has been made yet will understandably leave fans on edge. Liverpool cannot afford a scenario where another club swoops in with a tempting offer during the upcoming transfer window.
While Salah dominates the attacking narrative, Virgil van Dijk remains the cornerstone of Liverpool’s defensive structure. His performances this season have earned him the title of “the best centre-back in the Premier League,” as per Squawka’s score system.
In a recent interview, Van Dijk opened up about his role under new tactics introduced by Arne Slot:
“With the new trainer Arne Slot, slightly different things are being asked. Not just from me, but also from the other players. I have a very prominent role in that, and I like that. And I think the trainer is also very happy with that.”
Van Dijk’s detailed insight into his position highlights his adaptability and footballing intelligence:
“I am in a position where, for example, you see how the opponent is putting pressure. With one or two or three strikers. Are the opponent’s backs high or not, do they play with one or two controlling midfielders? There are different options every time.”
It’s clear that Van Dijk is not only thriving under this new system but also enjoying the process. His leadership on and off the pitch is invaluable, and locking him into a long-term contract is essential for Liverpool to maintain their defensive strength.
Although Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t directly featured in the recent updates, his importance cannot be understated. Known for his playmaking ability from deep, Trent is integral to Liverpool’s identity. His vision, creativity, and link-up play with Salah on the right flank provide a lethal edge that few teams in Europe can replicate. Without him, Liverpool’s attacking rhythm would face a significant setback.
With Salah delivering Ballon d’Or-worthy performances, Van Dijk solidifying his place as the best centre-back in England, and Trent orchestrating the team’s creativity, it’s clear that this trio forms the backbone of Liverpool’s success. While Peter Moore’s comments provide some reassurance that progress is being made, the lack of concrete updates leaves fans restless.
The January transfer window is notorious for unsettling players whose contracts are unresolved. Liverpool must finalise these deals before other clubs even have a chance to entertain offers. Both Salah and Van Dijk have expressed their happiness in their current roles, with Van Dijk stating, “I am really enjoying this.” However, prolonged delays risk jeopardising this harmony.
Liverpool fans are justified in their concern. The club is riding a wave of success this season, thanks in no small part to Salah’s brilliance, Van Dijk’s leadership, and Trent’s vision. Securing their futures should be Liverpool’s top priority. While Peter Moore assures us that progress is being made, swift and decisive action is needed to settle nerves and ensure that this trio remains at Anfield for years to come.
