Morgan Rogers ‘really excited’ as Chelsea beat Arsenal to record-breaking transfer | OneFootball

Morgan Rogers says he is “really excited” to sign for Chelsea in a record-breaking transfer from Aston Villa this summer. 

The Blues have paid a massive £117 million (€137m) transfer fee for the attacking midfielder, making it both a club record deal and the most expensive signing in British football history.

It is also the biggest deal of the year thus far, overtaking the £116 million Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest to sign Elliot Anderson.

Arsenal had been interested in signing the 23-year-old, but The Athletic report that the player preferred a move to Stamford Bridge because he was “impressed” by new manager Xabi Alonso and “the club’s overall project”.

“I’m so excited,” Rogers said in his first official club interview. “For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.

“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”

Rogers joined Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for a reported £8 million, potentially rising to £15 million with performance-related add-ons. Boro reportedly included a 20 per cent sell-on clause in the deal at the time.

Rogers went on to make 40 goal contributions in 85 Premier League games for the Villans and helped the side win the UEFA Europa League last season.

Thomas Tuchel included Rogers in his England squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America, where he played in seven out of eight games, making three starts. He set up Anthony Gordon for the opening goal in the semi-final against Argentina, but the Three Lions ultimately lost the game 2-1 before finishing third in the tournament.
