A fresh sporting row between Spain and Morocco is brewing after Fouzi Lekjaa said the 2030 World Cup final will be staged at the Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca, which is still being built.

According to Superdeporte, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation president, a prominent figure in the Party of Authenticity and Modernity’s election campaign, told supporters that Benslimán province would host the final and urged future governments to develop the area.

Real Federación Española de Fútbol president Rafael Louzán, speaking in Ceuta on 4 September, has maintained that Spain should host the final, arguing it is currently the leading football nation while stressing respect for bid partners and that FIFA will take the decision.

Spain, Portugal and Morocco share the 2030 bid, though Portugal has been ruled out for the final due to stadium capacity. The main options discussed are the Santiago Bernabéu, Spotify Camp Nou and Casablanca’s Hassan II Stadium, planned for 115,000 seats.

Separately, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will each stage their national team’s opening match as a centenary tribute to the 1930 World Cup, which was held entirely in Montevideo.
