Jose Mourinho has had his way since arriving as Real Madrid’s manager and is being backed with every signing he demands.

The administration, after all, fully believes in the coach’s ability to turn the club’s situation around and have handed him complete control of all transfers.

So far, the manager has largely made defensive signings, but the one attacking improvement he actively pushed for was that of Bernardo Silva.

The former Manchester City player, after all, adds serious value to the team’s creative output and is a handy option to deploy on the right wing, a department where Real Madrid have struggled in recent years.

Mourinho’s Swiss knife?

As reported by The Athletic (h/t Madrid Xtra) in a recent report, Mourinho does not have a singular fixed position for Silva on the field and eyes the new signing to be capable of playing in multiple positions.

The Portuguese manager plans to use the former Manchester City star in multiple positions based on the game situation and squad status – virtually handing him a free role.

Mourinho sees Silva as a bona fide attacking threat but sees utility in deploying him as a number eight, a number ten, or even on the right wing based on the game situation.

He could, thus, play both as a midfielder and an attacker over the course of the season.

A question of competition

While the report does make logical sense given Silva’s versatility and incredible attacking talent, one is forced to ask the question of whether it is even realistic to see the player playing in a midfield position.

For the new signing to play as a No. 10, it would require Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler to be dropped to a deeper position where neither star delivers a solid performance.

Further, recent reports have hinted that Bellingham is the centre-piece of Real Madrid’s midfield plans and that he will be an undisputed starter.

Mourinho also sees Guler as a potent threat and wishes to capitalise on his talent.

It is very unlikely that Silva will be deployed as a number ten, or even a number eight during games once the season starts. The right-wing, where there is limited competition, is where he may well settle down.
