Mowbray confident of January transfer window backing at Blackburn following Venky’s attendance at Ewood Park | OneFootball

Tony Mowbray says he has been promised financial backing to strengthen his Blackburn squad in January following their 3-1 win over Millwall.

Blackburn were unable to complete several deals before the summer transfer deadline, but Mowbray insists the money was available and remains confident he will be able to add to his squad when the window reopens.

It comes after Balaji Rao, part of the Venky’s ownership, attended Ewood Park on Saturday.

“There was a promise of help and through my conversation with him there, I think financial help was there,” Mowbray said.

“If we’d made four more signings in the window, it might have cost three, four, five million.

“It didn’t happen because we didn’t get the deals over the line, players made other choices. I sit here having spoken to him and the support is still there and the financial help we require in January.

“Hopefully, from January 1 we will be signing players. Let’s hope we can hang in there and see if we can be where we need to be until we strengthen in January.”

Mowbray also addressed chants from the Blackburn supporters directed at the ownership during the Millwall victory and thanked them for continuing to back his players.

“I’m very aware of the chants and the noise,” he said. “I don’t think the players are aware; it actually created an atmosphere in the stadium which the team bounced off.

“I thank the supporters for backing the team. I felt the warmth towards the team and myself.”

But the Blackburn boss refused to be drawn further into the issues behind the supporters’ frustrations, insisting his focus remains on matters on the pitch.

“On the other side, I am not a politician; I don’t get involved,” he added.

“All I can tell the fans is I have met them, they promised financial help and I think it was there but we didn’t get the deals done.”
