Newcastle United ace available in 2027 - Birmingham City & Millwall must move

Birmingham City and Millwall should look to sign Newcastle United's Nick Pope, who is out of contract in the summer of 2027.

Newcastle United keeper Nick Pope is unlikely to feature for Matthias Jaissle’s side this season after falling down the pecking order at St. James’ Park.

The former Burnley man moved to the north-east in the summer of 2022, and he has gone on to make over 125 appearances for the club, during what has been a very successful period on the whole.

However, Lukáš Horníček joined Newcastle from Braga as their number one this summer, and the club also splashed out on Ewen Jaouen, with the 20-year-old seen as a keeper with huge potential.

As a result, Pope didn’t even make the bench in the early weeks of the campaign, and whilst an injury to Jaouen meant he was involved in the past few games, he seems unlikely to play at all this season.

Nick Pope will leave Newcastle United when his deal expires in 2027

Therefore, it was somewhat surprising that Pope didn’t secure a move away in the summer, although a deal was always going to be difficult to do when you consider the wages he will be on.

That could prevent a January transfer as well, although Newcastle are not going to stand in his way if credible interest does emerge in the stopper.

Either way, with his deal expiring in 2027, it’s fair to say this is highly likely to be Pope’s final season with the Magpies.

Pope will be 35 when his deal expires, and the 10-cap England international is sure to have suitors. And, here we look at TWO current Championship clubs that should have the keeper on their radar…

Birmingham City

James Beadle is on another season-long loan at Birmingham as their number one, and even though he made a high-profile mistake against Middlesbrough last time out, he has had a decent season.

Nevertheless, the England youth international is a Brighton player, and he is scheduled to return to the Premier League side next year.

So, Blues will be in the market for a new keeper, and Pope could be exactly what they need. If Chris Davies’ side have won promotion, then adding someone with his experience and know-how will help the dressing room.

Yet, if they remain in the second tier, he could be the perfect short-term solution to turn Birmingham from promotion contenders to a team that will get over the line.

At 35, Pope will still feel he has a few years left at a decent level, and for Birmingham to get a player of his pedigree on a free transfer could be a shrewd bit of business to solve what has been something of a problem position.

Millwall

Millwall are in a similar position to Birmingham in that they will hope to be a Premier League club for the 2027/28 season, and, like Blues, they could benefit from Pope in either league.

Lukas Jensen has suffered terrible luck on the injury front in the past few years, and he is currently out for a lengthy period of time right now.

So, the Lions will need a new keeper, as the reality is that Max Crocombe hasn’t always impressed, and whilst Filip Marschall did well against West Ham, he hasn’t shown enough just yet to suggest he is good enough for a team with the ambition of Millwall.

If the Londoners are a Championship club, Pope would command a decent salary by Millwall’s standards, but they won’t be in a position where they need to overhaul the squad.

Instead, it will be about targeting clear upgrades for specific positions, and whilst Pope may not suit Millwall’s model in terms of a lack of resale value, he could help them make that jump to the Premier League.
