Mozambique vs Guinea: another decisive showdown?
Mozambique and Guinea go head-to-head this Thursday in another crucial World Cup 2026 qualifier. Both nations have everything to play for in this penultimate round of Group G action.
Currently sitting third in Group G, level on points with Uganda (15 pts), Mozambique can climb to second place with a win. Even a draw could be enough, depending on other results. The Mambas are coming off an important home victory over Botswana (2-0), bouncing back after a heavy defeat to Uganda (4-0).
Guinea (10 points) aren’t out of the running yet. The Syli National absolutely need a win to keep their hopes alive and shake up the group standings. Unbeaten in their last two matches (4 points out of a possible 6), the Guineans are brimming with confidence. At the pre-match press conference, third assistant coach Mamadouba Sylla made his ambitions clear:
We want to use these final matches to rebuild our squad for the next Africa Cup of Nations. We need to restore confidence to the people of Guinea. (…) Despite difficulties with some sick players, we’ve called up young talents to rebuild our team, and that starts with a victory.
In the reverse fixture last June, Mozambique claimed a 1-0 win in Conakry—a defeat the Syli National are determined to avenge.
