Mikel Arteta praised Martin Odegaard’s growing confidence in front of goal after the Arsenal captain fired his side to a 1-0 Champions League victory over Napoli.

Odegaard produced the decisive moment to secure all three points for the Gunners, with Arteta delighted by the midfielder’s willingness to take responsibility.

“That’s what we need, the players with that mindset to decide a game and to play with that personality,” Arteta said.

“Keep persisting, keep taking chances and risks.”

The Arsenal boss also believes Odegaard is increasingly getting himself into dangerous goalscoring positions – and now has the confidence to make them count.

“He’s getting into those positions much more in recent games and now you feel he has that emotional state where he knows the ball can go in,” Arteta added.

“And he scored an incredible goal tonight.”
