Thomas Müller has quickly found his feet in Canada. Ahead of the MLS playoffs, the world champion talks about his start in Vancouver.
A few days before the start of the knockout round, the 36-year-old is extremely positive about his first few weeks with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Speaking to the club’s own media, the former Munich native said of his move in the summer: „I was open to a lot of things.“ He continued: „But I didn’t expect to make such a good choice.“
The attacking all-rounder has been living in British Columbia since mid-August, and his record at the start of the season is impressive: seven goals and three assists in seven MLS games. Müller let it be known that the journey was „sensational – for me, for the team, for the fans. But my work is not done yet“. FC Dallas now awaits in the first play-off round; whoever wins two games will progress.
„We’re in the playoffs now, I don’t care about the future. Just about winning a big thing,“ explained the attacker, who immediately became a difference-maker in Vancouver. Coach Jesper Sörensen emphasised via the club media that it was „really great to have a player like Thomas here“. The Dane also praised: „He’s definitely given us something back since he arrived and he’s also a champion off the pitch – that’s what makes him special.“
The move to North America followed the end of an era in Munich. In 11Freunde magazine, sporting director Max Eberl explained the decision not to extend the expiring contract: „With Thomas, we ultimately decided we wanted to do something different in view of his sporting development in the spring.“ Money was not a factor: „To be honest, we didn’t talk to Thomas about money at all. It was much more about the squad idea.“
The world champion is currently dismissing any thoughts of returning to Säbener Straße at a later date. Müller reacted cautiously in the BR format Blickpunkt Sport: „That’s a pipe dream.“
When asked about his predetermined path to Munich, he added: „I’m aware of that. I know my skillset. But I still have no idea whether I could be a good coach and whether I want to be a good coach. And whether I could be a good sports official and want to be a good sports official.“
