Murilo moved to 21 goals for Palmeiras as the centre-backs starred in a 5-1 win over Vitória on Wednesday in the Campeonato Brasileiro, drawing level with idol Cléber among the club’s five highest-scoring defenders.
Gustavo Gómez leads the list on 44 goals, with Luís Pereira on 36, Loschiavo 32 and Vágner Bacharel 22. Wearing number 26, Murilo has made 203 appearances. Globo.com reports these tallies.
He said the status makes him proud, adding that while he prioritises team objectives over personal marks, it shows the work is paying off and he is helping at both ends, with strong defensive numbers in recent years and contributions in attack.
Palmeiras face Corinthians on Sunday at 20:30 Brasília time, and a draw tonight would secure early qualification for the Campeonato Paulista knockout phase.
Abel Ferreira is expected to start Gómez and Murilo again in the Dérbi, with the pair also tasked with helping to end a run of five matches conceding. The duo are known threats from set plays, having scored 11 times each in 2022 when dead balls were a team strength.
