“My answer is yes” – Former Blue makes major claim about Chelsea and Xabi Alonso

Marcel Desailly believes Chelsea can challenge for the Premier League next season under Xabi Alonso if he gets things right.

The Blues confirmed the appointment of Alonso earlier this month, with the former Real Madrid boss signing a four year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso has also been given the title of manager, unlike Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior who were head coaches, suggesting he will have more control.

Marcel Desailly thinks Alonso can challenge for the title next season

The appointment of Alonso is seen as a real coup for Chelsea, with the players thought to be excited at the prospect of working under the Spaniard.

Reece James has labelled Alonso an amazing manager, but the 44-year-old has got a serious job on his hands in west London.

Chelsea endured a miserable season in which they lost the FA Cup final, finished tenth and missed out on European football all together.

Michael Essien believes Alonso has to win a trophy next season to keep the ownership happy, whilst Desailly believes a title challenge is possible.

“Yes, yes, there’s a chance [they can win the title], Desailly told TEAMtalk.

“You learn from the mistakes you have made. They will look to add three or four first-choice players into his starting XI, and while it’s going to be expensive for sure, they also have players they can dispose of to generate income.

“Eventually, they have to stop having 70 players out on loan all around the world. The management needs to start thinning it out!

“So my answer is yes, Chelsea can (challenge for the title). Because when you are young (as Chelsea are), you have a certain lightheartedness and freedom from responsibility that gives you the belief that you can do it.

“You can erase mistakes or problems much more easily because you are young and the best is still yet to come.”
