While the manager has yet to find his best lineup, star striker Youssef Chermiti is now ruled out for a significant period after rupturing his ACL against Hibernian. After a failed ‘back three’ set-up against Hibs, McInnes should revert to his trademark 4-4-2 for a strict defensive structure. Ross McCrorie might get the nod down the right, with versatile Dujon Sterling shifted on the left in the wake of Tuur Rommens’ groin injury. The Belgian has been a shining light with his overlapping runs and attacking influence, but his absence might force the board to step up its pursuit of a new left-back. Ben Godfrey is ruled out for weeks, and the new boy Olwethu Makhanya deserves a run of games alongside Emmanuel Fernandez in the heart of the backline.

Rangers have significantly bolstered their midfield by snapping up Dan Neil, Cammy Devlin and Vanja Dragojević. But they are likely to part ways with Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande, who have suitors in Europe. Raskin could still be involved, given the weight and relevance of this fixture, and Devlin might retain his spot for his relentless pressing, aggressive tackling, and old-school work rate in the middle of the park.
