Julian Nagelsmann has called up Assan Ouédraogo to replace the injured Lennart Karl for the World Cup, and has outlined his reasoning.

Karl was ruled out on Friday. In comments on the German Football Association’s website, Nagelsmann said the midfielder is highly talented and is expected to play with confidence, courage and freedom.

The 20-year-old RB Leipzig player scored on his senior debut off the bench in a 6-0 win over Slovakia in November. He has not featured for Germany since, after a knee injury sidelined him for much of the second half of the season.

Nagelsmann added that Ouédraogo, like Karl, made an excellent start with the national team.

Germany play their final World Cup warm-up friendly against the United States on Saturday night.
