Julian Nagelsmann gathered the 26-man Germany squad and staff at the team hotel to support Lennart Karl after an injury ended his World Cup hopes, Kicker reports.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said Nagelsmann addressed the group, everyone was present, and Karl also spoke despite the difficulty. He added the youngster was extremely sad and, he thought, shed a few tears.
From Munich, Bayern director of sport Max Eberl called the news a shock and said missing a World Cup so close to the start is extremely painful, but insisted it does not change how much talent, passion and future Karl has. He said Karl earned this World Cup after an outstanding first professional season and will receive all the support he needs at Bayern to return soon.
“It shocked me and I feel very sorry for the boy. It's also a big sporting loss for Nagelsmann and the team. Lennart Karl did very well. But he still has many opportunities, many tournaments ahead of him. That can make him stronger,” he told Sky Germany.
Eberl added Karl is already looking ahead and says he will come back stronger, while Matthaüs believes many more tournaments await him.
