Nantes’ Matthis Abline sets ambitious France objective

Matthis Abline (26) has set an objective to break into the France squad, he revealed during an interview with RMC Sport.

Abline enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last time around. The Frenchman netted 11 goals in Ligue 1 last season as he helped FC Nantes retain their place in Ligue 1. It came after his formative club, Stade Rennais, opted to sell him.

And Rennes were quickly made to rue their decision as Abline impressed, forcing his way into the France U21 set-up. He was also heavily linked with a big-money move away from the Beaujoire over the summer, however, Les Canaris put a substantial €50m price-tag on his head, which deterred suitors.

The start of the current campaign has not been as fruitful for Abline, who, seemingly distracted by those links with a move away, has netted just twice so far this season. However, his performances have improved in recent weeks, and he has now told RMC Sport of an ambitious objective.

It (a France call-up) is a high objective but one that is achievable, too,” began the Nantes forward. “So I have to continue to work. I don’t doubt myself, and we will see in the coming years. It is a long-term objective.”
