Nashville SC continues its active offseason with the announcement of the signing of Dominican Republic international goalkeeper Xavier Valdez. Valdez joins the club under a contract running through 2025, with options to extend through 2026 and 2027.

Xavier Valdez isn't just another name to complete the roster, but his signing shows big thoughts by Nashville SC in balancing experience with youth-a necessary strategy for a league that is as aggressive in its nature as MLS. Club General Manager Mike Jacobs added they didn't make this move without reason: "Xavier is a promising young player who has already gained unique playing experiences nationally and internationally, for a goalkeeper of his age."

Valdez was signed after impressing in MLS NEXT Pro with Houston Dynamo 2, where he kept eight clean sheets in more than 50 games for the team, showing how consistent and composed he is under pressure.

Complementing his performance in MLS NEXT Pro, Valdez has been called up 11 times by the Dominican Republic national team, representing his country in high-profile competitions like the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2024 Summer Olympics.

These experiences highlight not only his skill, but also his ability to perform under the intense pressure of international tournaments. For a player at this stage of his career, being exposed to such high-stakes matches is a significant advantage.

Jacobs underscored the value of this experience, saying, "We’re excited to add him to our group of goalkeepers here at Nashville."

The goalkeeper dynamic at Nashville SC

Coming into the team in place of backup goalkeeper Elliot Panicco, Valdez now joins the club to fight for a number two position behind Joe Willis, Nashville's established starter, adding depth to the roster and some flexibility, thereby building competitiveness and camaraderie among squad members.

Joe Willis remains a sure presence in goal for Nashville, but having Valdez as an added option strengthens the team's defensive lineup. In addition, adding a young, ambitious goalkeeper brings fresh air into the locker room and pushes everyone to their best.

The dynamic of this sort of competition not only helps Valdez in his development but also overall team performance. A win-win that goes along with Nashville SC's goals this coming season.
