Nathan Jones’ Charlton Athletic transfer jackpot: Addicks must fix big issue

Tyreece Campbell and Miles Leaburn have not been consistent enough this season, and this issue must be fixed ASAP.

Despite defeat to Norwich City on Saturday afternoon, Charlton Athletic are seemingly just a few points away from securing their Championship status for the 2026/27 campaign, with Nathan Jones' side nine points clear of the relegation zone right now.

There are just seven games to go in this season's second tier, and after two successive wins, the Addicks have picked up just one point from their two most recent matches. Nevertheless, they hold a significant advantage over Leicester City and Oxford United ahead of the final international break of the campaign.

Pelle Mattsson's fifth-minute strike at the weekend was enough to hand the Canaries victory at The Valley, keeping Philippe Clement's side with a slim chance of making the play-offs, although Norwich are running out of time to make that top six push.

Nevertheless, for Charlton, success this season will be avoiding relegation. While they are yet to achieve survival just yet, this has been an excellent year for the South-East London outfit, but their boss may have hoped for a little more from two of his young, attacking stars in the Championship.

Tyreece Campbell and Miles Leaburn need to offer more for Charlton Athletic

In League One, Tyreece Campbell and Miles Leaburn were two of the most exciting young prospects in the division, and the step-up to the second tier was one that many expected them to make, and make it well. However, their output in the final third has not been good enough this season.

The latter of the two has scored only once in the Championship in 2025/26, with that strike coming in a 3-0 away victory against Ipswich Town in October, and he has severely underperformed compared to his xG rate (3.18), while he has had 35 shots with just nine of those on target.

Meanwhile, Campbell has scored three times and registered three assists. He found the back of the net seven times in League One last season, and while he has shown glimpses of his brilliance for Charlton, there is no denying that Jones would have liked him to provide more.

The 22-year-old has been a threat at times on the left, and his goal against Derby County in February is a true example of how dangerous he can be when he cuts the ball onto his right foot, but this must happen on a more consistent basis.

Charlton Athletic will be hoping a second season in the Championship will help with development

Considering the ages of the two attacking players, Charlton will be hoping that in the years to come they can make significant money for the pair, with both coming from the club's academy to become regulars for the first team in the last few years.

However, having found it slightly more difficult to adapt to the Championship than first hoped, another year in the second tier may well be the making of both Leaburn and Campbell, and with more game time in 2026/27, they may well just show their true quality.

Campbell, in particular, is a player who has all the talent to become a Premier League player in the years to come, with the winger also featuring at international level for Jamaica, and he needs to be playing at the highest level possible to ensure that he continues to get caps for The Reggae Boyz.

Nonetheless, this season is a learning curve for the 22-year-olds, and there have been signs that they have been able to adapt to the Championship. With Charlton likely to be in the division once again in 2026/27, Jones must now keep them confident in front of goal.
