Liverpool defeated Newcastle United at Anfield to extend their lead atop the Premier League table to 13 points. The Reds did not have to leave second gear but calmly dispatched their opponents.

The Reds had to wait until the second half to double their lead. Alexis Mac Allister won the ball in midfield, steamed forward, and rifled home a cutback from Mohamed Salah to ensure the victory.

Szoboszlai and Salah got most of the plaudits for their display, but Mac Allister was equally sensational and underrated as he has been all season. His ability to connect midfield to attack is second to none.

The Liverpool midfielder earned rave reviews, with the Express rating him 8/10 and saying of his performance, “Showed his intelligence and technical ability against a Newcastle midfield which has caused problems for other big teams. Started and finished the move, which saw him blast past Nick Pope for Liverpool’s second.”

Mac Allister is not the most eye-catching midfielder. His statistics do not always stand out, but he does his job in the engine room excellently.

Liverpool will need Mac Allister and co at their best from now till May as they bid to secure only their second Premier League title.

The Reds turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League, where they clash with Paris Saint-Germain for a place in the quarter-final.

PSG have been in rampant form. However, they have not met a team of Liverpool’s ilk. The Reds look unstoppable. Even when they are not at their best, they get results over the line.

Liverpool will be wary of the in-form Ousmane Dembele and his rapacious attacking band, but the Reds should have enough to get them past the Ligue 1 champions. This one promises fireworks.
