With about 30 days until the 2026 World Cup kicks off on 11 June and runs to 19 July, enthusiasm in the United States remains muted amid domestic sports and political rows. L'Équipe reports that the event is struggling to cut through.
Official “WE ARE 26” banners now line city centres from New York to Los Angeles via Dallas, and airport clocks count down to kick-off, yet momentum in host cities still feels thin.
Local journalist Asli Pelit Basker notes a shortage of flags and posters and says the mood is very quiet. She believes the Knicks’ strong NBA play-off run, and other sports, are dominating attention.
Paul Kennedy, editor-in-chief of Soccer America, argues football finds it hard to be heard amid the constant churn of US sports news. He adds that while specialist coverage is rising, core topics such as the United States’ chances and Mauricio Pochettino’s position receive little space.
Ticket and travel prices remain steep, overseas fans are uneasy about Donald Trump’s migration policy, and hoteliers complain of slow bookings. Kennedy says football already carries a poor image and that the build-up is turning into a partisan flashpoint.
Trump, aligned with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, has been quick to embrace the tournament. Democrats, including New Jersey governor Mikie Sherrill, have clashed with FIFA over transport costs to MetLife Stadium and are keeping their distance from a competition many families might find unaffordable. Kennedy questions whether stadiums will even be full, and if they are, whether genuine supporters will be inside.
In New York, new mayor Zohran Mamdani is pushing hardest, launching a programme for 50 street pitches outside schools and ensuring all fan zones will be free.
The 34-year-old Arsenal supporter stands out as one of the few decision-makers who view success as cultural and popular impact rather than organisers’ billions.
