The Netherlands and Poland clash in a crucial World Cup qualifier at Stadion Feijenoord on Thursday.
Both sides will be looking to strengthen their qualification hopes in Group G, with the Dutch seeking to maintain their perfect start and Poland aiming to bounce back under new management.
Ronald Koeman has a strong 25-man squad at his disposal, with Memphis Depay fit and ready to make history. The 31-year-old striker shares the national team’s all-time scoring of 50 goal with Robin van Persie and will be eager to become the outright record holder this week.
Feyenoord’s Sem Steijn and Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs have received their first senior call-ups. Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk returns as captain, leading a defence that has kept clean sheets in both qualifying matches so far.
Jeremie Frimpong is ruled out with a hamstring injury he sustained against Bournemouth and will miss the match. Jurrien Timber returns from injury to bolster the defensive options. Bart Verbruggen comes back into the squad after missing the previous fixtures and might start but Flekken may keep his place in the starting line up after his consistent performances.
Robert Lewandowski makes a dramatic return to the national team after new manager Jan Urban restored him as captain. The Barcelona striker had boycotted international duty under previous coach Michal Probierz following a dispute over the armband.
Urban has appointed Piotr Zielinski as vice-captain and Jan Bednarek as third captain in a bid to restore harmony within the squad. Fitness coach Juan Iribarren has joined the staff as Urban completes his backroom team.
The Eagles will be without several key players, with former captain Bartosz Bereszynski omitted from the 25-man squad. Lukasz Skorupski is expected to start in goal ahead of other options including Kamil Grabara.
Koeman’s side has made a flawless start to World Cup qualifying with victories over Finland (2-0) and Malta (8-0). The eight-goal thrashing of Malta showcased their attacking prowess, with Depay scoring twice and Donyell Malen also netting a brace.
Their recent Nations League campaign saw draws against Spain, demonstrating their ability to compete with Europe’s elite. The Dutch have won their last nine home World Cup qualifiers, keeping seven clean sheets.
The White Eagles began qualifying positively with wins over Lithuania (1-0) and Malta (2-0), but suffered a setback with a 2-1 defeat to Finland in June. That loss ultimately cost Probierz his job and led to Urban’s appointment.
