Manuel Neuer is working flat out on his comeback – and the signs ahead of the Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund continue to point to hope
As reported by Sky, the Bayern captain completed another individual session at Säbener Straße today, Tuesday. The 39-year-old still refrained from jumping and spectacular flying moves after his calf injury, but several exercises have already been carried out with increased intensity. Neuer is clearly working towards a start in the classic
After tearing a muscle fibre in his left calf in the 3-0 win in Bremen, there was initially talk of a break of around three weeks. The top match against BVB therefore hardly seemed realistic. However, the situation had already brightened up somewhat in recent days
On Monday, Neuer was back on the training pitch for around 30 minutes for the first time. Under the guidance of goalkeeping coach Michael Rechner and rehab coach Simon Martinello, he carefully worked his way up. Initially, exercises on the ground dominated, followed by the first light catching exercises
Now the intensity is being increased further – but still under the strict supervision of the medical team. Full push-off movements or maximum loads are not yet on the program. No risks should be taken in this crucial phase of the season
After the 3:2 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt, sporting director Max Eberl had already indicated that an appearance against Dortmund was „not out of the question“. These words now carry additional weight
At the same time, FC Bayern know that they have a reliable substitute in Jonas Urbig. The 22-year-old has shown solid performances in recent games and gives those responsible additional security
Whether Neuer will actually stand between the posts at Signal Iduna Park will be decided in the coming training days, but one thing is clear: the captain is working hard – and the hope of a comeback in the classic is alive.
