Jamie Carragher was on Sky last night looking at Liam Rosenior’s first games in charge of Chelsea, and he had some interesting thoughts on it.

Carragher points to “De Zerbi like” obsession with central play from Rosenior

“Now man to man marking here with Fofana. I’ve never seen this before. A centre back who’s the left sided centre back in a back four, crossing over the pitch to pop up on the right with Odegaard. So Odegaard started on the left and tried to drag Fofana with him… and as I said he’s the left sided centre back. And as I say I’ve never seen that before,” Carragher said, showing an example on screen.

“There’s a real emphasis on man to man marking, right throughout the team. Again, you can see Fofana, he’s the left sided centre back… but again this idea to always go through the middle of the pitch, very De Zerbi like at times, always going through one of the two pivots or one of the strikers going deep. It’s not just playing through teams, if teams go man to man – which many do – it’s can you find that man on the last line. That’s just something I picked up from the Arsenal game.”

We know that Rosenior has been influenced by De Zerbi, now we’re seeing how.

Carragher also had his fair share of criticisms to make, although they tended to be focused on the project as a whole rather than Rosenior. The pundit pointed out that simply buying young players was proven to be a losing strategy.

Wesley Fofana came on against Brentford and helped his team keep a clean sheet. They’ve not lost a game this season with 11 men when the Frenchman has started – but the problem is he can only play half our games at best.
