It has been a torrid season for the Owls due to off-field issues under owner Dejphon Chansiri, who has failed to pay the wages on time five times in the past seven months, which is set to bring a points deduction for the team.

However, arguably the only positive has been the emergence of several academy players who have stepped up to the first-team, with Weaver one who has certainly taken his opportunity.

Sheffield Wednesday dealt Ernie Weaver injury blow

The 19-year-old has impressed in defence for Henrik Pedersen, but he is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, after journalist Andy Giddings revealed Weaver has suffered an ankle problem.

He explained that even though Weaver had been playing with the injury for a while, it has reached the stage where the issue requires surgery, and there is now an expectation that he will be out for ‘months’.

Naturally, the fans were gutted by this development, as the Owls squad is lacking depth, so Pedersen is going to have to tweak things as they try to battle against the odds to stay in the league.

Among the complaints regarding the development, one fan pointed out that the lack of depth, which was due to a transfer ban for the summer window, means Weaver had been thrown into a situation he may not have been ready for.

Another was quick to point out that the Owls' situation had contributed to Weaver needing to play regularly even though he wasn't fully fit.

One supporter questioned just how many players Wednesday actually had available now.

A Wednesday fan did manage to find some good news from the update though, as it increases Weaver's chances of staying at Hillsborough beyond the upcoming January window.

Sheffield Wednesday will miss Ernie Weaver after injury update

Firstly, this is a real shame for Weaver, as he had been waiting for his chance in the first-team, and he has shown why he is highly-rated at the club.

So, he will be gutted to miss the next few months, as he would've played regularly under Pedersen, and that could have been good for his development.

Obviously, you can understand why fans are questioning whether he should've been playing through the pain, and it will be interesting to see if anything more comes of that when Pedersen speaks to the press moving forward.

But, these things happen in football, and now it's about Weaver focusing on his recovery, and hopefully he can get back into the team to show what he can do later in the season.
