Speaking exclusively with FLW, Don Goodman has been discussing Danny Rohl being linked with the Rangers job.
Sky Sports pundit and EFL expert Don Goodman has weighed in on the debate surrounding ex-Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl and a potential move to SPFL giants Rangers following the dismissal of Russell Martin.
The Owls and Gers have, respectably, dominated plenty of early-season headlines either side of the border for all the wrong reasons, with there being a strong sense of apathy at both Hillsborough and Ibrox.
The situation is, of course, much more bleak for Wednesday at present, with the Steel City outfit already staring relegation back to League One in the face as supporters continue to showcase their anger towards controversial owner, Dejphon Chansiri, who is now reportedly looking for assisted investment to help pay off outstanding debts and wage bills instead of selling the club to one of the parties interested in taking over.
Meanwhile, Rangers' start to the current season under the former Southampton boss couldn't have been more disastrous.
They were dumped out of the UEFA Champions League after a 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge at the play-off stage, whilst their Europa League campaign has since begun with two defeats to Genk and Sturm Graz respectively.
As such, Martin's final straw came on Sunday, as Rangers stuttered to another draw away to Falkirk, leaving them eighth in the table with one win from their first seven league encounters.
With Martin's dismissal being confirmed in the fallout of the 1-1 draw at Falkirk Stadium, it was reported by talkSPORT that the ex-Owls boss' resume has impressed the Ibrox hierarchy as they look to make a swift appointment.
Rohl left Wednesday nine days before the start of the current season after well-documented issues surrounding the club's plight, which included delayed wage payments, a transfer fee restriction and a registration embargo which led to a mass exodus of senior players.
Before said fallout, the 36-year-old became a cult figure in S6 after initially masterminding a 'Great Escape' act in the 2023/24 season, in which his side recorded 15 wins in 35 league games to drag themselves from the foot of the Championship table to a final-day survival, before comfortably finishing in mid-table last term despite brief flirtations with the play-offs.
Whilst summer links to the likes of Leicester City, Middlesbrough and Werder Bremen came to no avail for the former German national team and Southampton assistant, his stock very much remains high, with the likes of Goodman not surprised that he's being targeted by a club of such stature and ambition.
"The link between Danny Rohl and Rangers is an obvious one. It's an understandable one," the Sky Sports pundit exclusively told Football League World.
"Danny Rohl did a pretty reasonable job at Sheffield Wednesday, especially when he first went in and they were on their knees, propping up the Championship. He managed to turn that around," Goodman noted.
"The following season it was just OK, in reality. Is that going to excite the Rangers fanbase, who didn't particularly want Russell Martin?
"Would they want Danny Rohl?," the former striker questioned, "I think Russell Martin had achieved more, in reality, than Danny Rohl.
"It's an interesting link, and I can understand why there's that link."
Of course, the expectation levels in Glasgow and Sheffield are extremely contrasting, especially at present.
However, it will be a massive benefit to Rohl that he went through a contrast of experiences at Hillsborough as he looks to take his next step in management.
Heading into the October international break, the Gers are 11 points behind leaders Hearts, and more than anything, are in need of a major confidence boost to spark a change in fortunes, which Rohl evidently achieved at the beginning of his tenure with the Owls.
Even more so, there is a nice blend of experienced heads and flair players at Ibrox - not too dissimilar to what he inherited in South Yorkshire two seasons ago - which includes former Wednesday star, Djeidi Gassama.
Therefore, with Rohl previously demonstrating an immediate impact, as well as his hopes of eventually receiving the backing to have long-term success after fallouts with Chansiri, it is understandable why the link is there and why Goodman sees it as "obvious".
Of course, plenty of other names have been linked, such as Slaven Bilic, Sean Dyche and former Gers cult figure, Kevin Muscat, making it an intriguing set of developments to keep an eye on.
