Jerome Boateng appears to be on the verge of launching his coaching career. There has been repeated speculation recently about which path the former Bayern pro will take after his playing career. Now it seems a decision has been made.

According to information from the Turkish broadcaster HT Spor, Boateng is set to join Trabzonspor. The 38-year-old is expected to work there as an assistant coach, marking his first official role on the coaching staff.

According to the report, Boateng and the Turkish first-division club have reached a basic agreement on the collaboration. The former German national team player is expected to travel to Trabzon shortly to sign his contract.

Boateng is expected to assist Thomas Reis

There have recently been changes on the coaching staff at Trabzonspor. Following a disappointing start to the season in the Süper Lig and the Europa League, the club parted ways with Fatih Tekke.

Thomas Reis was hired as his successor. The German coach is tasked with leading Trabzonspor back to success and will apparently receive prominent support from his home country.

Boateng is expected to join Reis’s coaching staff. For the longtime center back, this would be his first job in coaching and thus the start of a new chapter in his career following his time as a professional player.

Official confirmation from the club is still pending. According to HT Spor, however, the essential conditions for the move have already been met. With the planned trip to Turkey and the signing of the contract, the final steps could be taken shortly.

Boateng celebrated his greatest successes at FC Bayern

Boateng enjoyed his most successful period as a player in Munich. In 2011, the center back transferred from Manchester City to FC Bayern and, over many years, developed into one of the record champions’ most important defenders.

With the Munich club, Boateng won, among other titles, nine German championships and five DFB Cups. Particularly memorable were the two “triple” seasons in 2013 and 2020, during which Bayern also won the Champions League each time.

Boateng also achieved the greatest success of his career while playing for the German national team. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he was part of the team that secured the World Cup title in the final against Argentina. In total, he made 76 international appearances.

After his time at Bayern, Boateng played for Olympique Lyon and US Salernitana, among others. Now, his focus could finally shift from the field to the bench.
