FC Bayern is not only on the verge of the next championship title in sporting terms – the record champions could also play a special role in history. The German Football League has revised the iconic championship trophy. And everything points to the fact that Munich, of all teams, will be the first to lift the new version
It is hardly surprising that FCB is on the verge of the next championship. FCB is marching through the Bundesliga with a large lead over the competition and is heading for its twelfth title in the past 13 years. A dominance that is second to none
Vincent Kompany and his team could make the 35th championship in the club’s history perfect as early as next weekend
The adaptation of the trophy has a very pragmatic background: there was simply not enough space. The names of the champions are traditionally engraved on the trophy – but the existing space is no longer sufficient to accommodate future winners
The DFL therefore commissioned a Bremen silver manufacturer to enlarge the bowl, resulting in more space for engravings and thus also for the history of the Bundesliga in the coming decades

However, such a measure is not new. The bowl, designed by art professor Elisabeth Treskow, was first enlarged back in the 1960s. Further adaptations followed in 1981 and 2009. Now the next modernization has been added
With a diameter of 56 centimetres and a weight of over eleven kilograms, it is now somewhat larger and more massive than before
However, this does not change its symbolic significance: the cup remains the most prestigious title in German club soccer. As a challenge cup, it is passed on every year, while the champions receive a replica for their club rooms
This season could therefore be historic for FC Bayern in two ways: on the one hand, the next championship title beckons, and on the other, the premiere with the new trophy
The Munich team could make everything clear as early as matchday 30. If Borussia Dortmund slip up, FCB will only need a draw against VfB Stuttgart. Otherwise, a win would be necessary to clinch the title early.
