Sheffield United will be aiming to bounce back from a disappointing campaign next year.

The Blades were competing for promotion in the play-offs just 12 months ago, but Chris Wilder’s side finished 13 points adrift of the top six in 2026.

It is set to be a busy summer ahead for the Yorkshire outfit, as they look to utilise the transfer market in order to bolster their hopes of climbing back up the table.

The play-offs will expand to include a further two teams in 2027, which will come as a boost to their hopes of competing for promotion.

However, first they must make the most of the next couple of months in order to improve the quality within the squad.

It has been reported by Football Insider that Sheffield United are one of three Championship sides interested in signing Rapid Vienna’s midfielder Romeo Amane.

Romeo Amane needs physical attributes to succeed at Sheffield United

When asked about the possibility of signing Amane, FLW’s Sheffield United fan pundit Jimmy claimed that he hasn’t been too impressed by what he’s discovered about the player so far.

While he’s sure the midfielder is talented, he is sceptical about his physical ability to compete regularly in the Championship given how physical it can be.

“I always find these signings really difficult to judge,” Jimmy told Football League World.

“So yes, he has played in the Conference League, how did he play in those games? What level of opposition was it against?

“His stats are decent, but not great.

“What attributes does he bring? The Championship’s a physical league.

“Is he a physical type of player, is he robust? Can he play 40 games in a season that we’ll need him to be part of, certainly part of the squad if he’s something we’re looking at.

“I’m sure if we’re linked with him he’ll have a level of talent, but without seeing him play, or knowing much further about him other than what’s written, then I can’t really form an opinion.

“It’ll have to be wait and see what he can bring.”

Amane made 31 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga last season, with Rapid Vienna finishing fifth in the table.

He contributed three assists, and was a key figure in the side, which has led to this speculation over his future.

Sheffield United face competition from both Birmingham City and Wrexham in the race to bring him to English football.

The 23-year-old has spent two years in Austria, signing for the European club from BK Hacken in 2025, having come through their academy system.

The midfielder made six appearances in the Conference League, with Rapid Vienna finishing bottom of the League Phase table.

If Sheffield United clinch his signing, then he could help add strength in depth in an area where four players have departed already this summer.

Both Jairo Riedewald and Tom Davies exited with the expiry of their contracts, and Kalvin Phillips has returned to Manchester City following the end of his loan spell, while Djobril Soumaré’s loan has also expired.

However, it’s been reported that the Blades are keen on a deal to bring the Premier League player back to Bramall Lane again for next season, but it remains to be seen whether an agreement can be reached.

Bolstering midfield will be important for Sheffield United

Sheffield United have seen a lot of departures in midfield, and are left with just a few options now, so it’s not too surprising to see them linked with Amane.

The 23-year-old is still young and has the potential to improve further, while also having European experience under his belt.

It will all depend on the potential cost of a deal, but it’s a move with some potential for Sheffield United.

Getting back to a strong competitive level will require some risks in the transfer market now that the club won’t be receiving parachute payments, and this is the kind of move that the Blades should be exploring.
