Manchester United fans may have to wait considerably longer than thought to hear any news on the much-anticipated new stadium.
Old Trafford is one of football’s most iconic and historical stadiums but it has seen better days.
Many visitors in recent years have commented on how it feels a relic and has been left behind by many new builds across Britain and Europe.
The Glazer family have faced substantial criticism over their lack of investment and frankly interest in taking Old Trafford into the 21st century.
Nonetheless, this all changed earlier in the year when minority owners Ineos announced that they are preparing to build a new 100,000 seater stadium that Sir Jim Ratcliffe has referred to the “Wembley of the North”.
It has been reported recently though that the club could be set to abandon a key feature of the new ground which is the tent like dome that was seen in images released earlier this year.
United had run into problems over the buying land around the current stadium to build the large dome over the structure but there has reportedly been progress in negotiations with the company Freightliner who currently own the land.
Despite this news, it doesn’t look like any work will start on a New Trafford anytime soon though.
The Daily Mail report that, in “an indication that the work on a £2 billion rebuild of Old Trafford won’t be starting anytime soon that the team officially mandated to oversee United’s new stadium district project are now busy designing the new San Siro.”
Despite progress in discussions with Freightliner over the required purchase of land around the stadium, “the club still need to secure private funding for the stadium project, and Government support for the wider regeneration of Old Trafford.”
The club hope to move into the stadium for the 2030-2031 season but “there has been no further update on United’s commitment to begin the ‘process’ of appointing an architect, with Foster + Partners only officially mandated to oversee the project.”
The architect company have since been given the all-clear to begin work on a new 71,500-seater San Siro in Milan for the use of both AC Milan and Inter Milan.
