There will be a new trial, with the prosecutor to appeal the acquittal of 11 of the 13 AS Roma ultras from the Curva Sud detained in Nice on the eve of a Europa League match in September. According to L'Équipe, the appeal follows Tuesday’s ruling at the Nice criminal court.
Only two of the 13 were convicted on Monday. They received three-month prison terms, including two months suspended, for carrying category D weapons, plus a two-year ban from the Alpes-Maritimes.
The court largely rejected the deputy prosecutor’s submissions. It found that alleged participation in a group preparing violence against people or damage to property, and for some a criminal association charge, was not established.
CRS and BAC units intervened quickly once gatherings formed, preventing clashes, aside from some grenades launched by officers at Place Masséna. During the 102 arrests, gathering evidence was not the primary focus.
