The forward has made 11 appearances for the Boys in Green since making his debut in 2024, but he has also suffered with injuries that have hindered him.

Szmodics had an ankle injury last year that meant he missed the summer games, and he was forced to pull out last month after featuring in the draw with Hungary in Dublin.

Sammie Szmodics set to miss Ireland games as injury issues continue

And, Heimir Hallgrimsson will once again be without the 30-year-old, as the East Anglian Daily Times has revealed that a fresh ankle problem means that Szmodics won’t be involved over the next week for his country.

This comes after the ex-Blackburn man played 86 minutes for Ipswich in their win over bitter rivals Norwich City at Portman Road on Sunday.

The full extent of his latest issue is unclear, so it remains to be seen whether he will be involved for the Tractor Boys when they return to action on October 17 when they make the trip up north to take on Middlesbrough.

Ipswich Town will hope Sammie Szmodics benefits from upcoming rest

Realistically, Ireland are in need of a miracle to reach the World Cup after their poor start to qualifying, so it’s a huge blow that Szmodics won’t be involved, even if he hasn’t found his best form in a green shirt.

They are sure to be frustrated by this latest update, particularly as Szmodics has yet to miss a game for Ipswich this season.

However, it’s clear he has been managing fitness issues, so in many ways the international break may be what he needs, as it will give him time to rest over the next ten days ahead of the trip to Boro.

So, Ipswich will be pleased by this update, as Kieran McKenna will know just how important Szmodics could be this season given his pedigree at Championship level.

Even though the Suffolk outfit have a squad packed full of quality, there are some standout individuals, and if Szmodics can rediscover his best form, he falls into that category.

A return of no goals and no assists in the first nine games show that Szmodics isn’t at his best, so hopefully he will benefit from the rest and get back to 100% - which is what Ipswich and Ireland want for the long-term.
