Newcastle United have confirmed the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as their new manager following Eddie Howe’s departure after almost five years in charge.

The 38-year-old arrives from Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli, where he established himself as one of the game’s brightest young managers by winning back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles.

The German will immediately take charge of first-team preparations, joining the squad at their pre-season training camp in La Manga as attention turns towards the new Premier League campaign.

Jaissle inherits a club undergoing significant changes on and off the pitch.

Howe’s departure marked the end of one of the most successful managerial spells in Newcastle’s modern history after he guided them from relegation danger to domestic silverware and regular European qualification.

The former Bournemouth boss delivered Newcastle’s first major trophy in 70 years by lifting the League Cup in 2025 before stepping away from the role earlier this summer.

Jaissle now faces the challenge of building on those foundations during a turbulent transfer window.

Newcastle have already sanctioned the sales of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, while Bruno Guimaraes is also closing in on a move to Arsenal.

Speaking after his appointment, Jaissle described joining Newcastle as ‘an incredible honour’.

“When Newcastle United comes your way, you take notice,” he said.

“The ambition of the club, the vision for the future and the opportunity ahead made this an incredibly compelling place to be.”

“I fully and unreservedly believe in this project, the ambition and the direction the club is taking.”

Jaissle earned widespread praise during his time with Red Bull Salzburg, winning two Austrian Bundesliga titles before moving to Al-Ahli in 2023.

His teams have become known for an aggressive pressing style, quick transitions and proactive football, characteristics heavily influenced by the Red Bull coaching philosophy developed under Ralf Rangnick.

Newcastle’s new manager will have little time to settle in before competitive action begins.

The Magpies still have pre-season fixtures against Valencia, Everton, Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg before opening their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool later this month.

With a new manager in place and further activity expected in the transfer market, Newcastle’s next chapter is officially underway.
