Newcastle United delivered a clinical performance on the road as they ran out 4-0 winners against Union St. Gilloise in their UEFA Champions League group stage clash at Lotto Park.
After a tough start to the season, the Magpies responded brilliantly to last weekend’s Premier League disappointment against Arsenal, securing their first away win in the Champions League since a 3-1 triumph over Bayer Leverkusen in 2003.
The visitors started on the front foot and were soon rewarded. In the 17th minute, a clever right-wing cross from Anthony Elanga was only partially cleared, and Sandro Tonali’s effort from the edge of the box was deftly guided home by Nick Woltemade. The goal gave Newcastle a deserved lead and set the tone for a dominant display.
Union tried to hit back, with Adem Zorgane forcing a smart save from Nick Pope and Joelinton nodding narrowly wide at the other end. But Newcastle continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their advantage just before half-time. Elanga, lively on the right, drew a clumsy challenge from Fedde Leysen, and the referee didn’t hesitate to point to the spot. Anthony Gordon stepped up and calmly tucked the ball into the bottom-right corner, giving the English side a 2-0 lead at the break.
The second half saw the Magpies maintain control, with Elanga causing problems down the wing and forcing goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen into a good stop. Union pushed for a response, with Anan Khalaili missing a golden opportunity and Ousseynou Niang and Zorgane testing Pope in quick succession.
However, Newcastle effectively killed the contest in the 64th minute when VAR spotted Leysen handling in the area from Gordon’s delivery. The England forward coolly converted his second penalty of the night, marking his third goal in this season’s Champions League.
Harvey Barnes then added a late flourish in the 80th minute, finishing off a rapid counterattack expertly set up by William Osula, to make it 4-0.
The victory not only secured Newcastle’s first points of the group stage after a narrow defeat to Barcelona but also marked their biggest Champions League away win. Next up, José Mourinho’s Benfica visit St James’ Park on October 21 - a tough test awaits, but Newcastle will head into it brimming with confidence.
