Newcastle finish the job against spirited Qarabag | OneFootball

Newcastle United sealed their place in the Champions League last 16 with a 3-2 win over Qarabag at St James' Park, wrapping up an emphatic 9-3 aggregate triumph.

Holding a five-goal cushion from the first leg, Eddie Howe shuffled his pack but still watched his side burst out of the blocks.

Sandro Tonali struck inside the opening minutes, pouncing after William Osula’s header was spilled by Mateusz Kochalski. Joelinton soon followed, meeting Harvey Barnes’ low delivery with a crisp first-time finish to put the hosts firmly in command.

With qualification virtually assured, the intensity dropped and Qarabag showed far greater resolve than in Baku. Camilo Duran capitalised on a defensive lapse early in the second half to pull one back and briefly lift the travelling support.

Any hint of tension was short-lived. Sven Botman rose highest to head in Kieran Trippier’s corner and reassert Newcastle’s authority.  The visitors responded once more after Dan Burn was penalised for handball; although Aaron Ramsdale saved the penalty, Elvin Cafarguliyev reacted quickest to convert the rebound.

The closing stages were open but largely academic. The Magpies advance comfortably and now await either Barcelona or Chelsea in the next round.
