Newcastle United are edging closer towards signing Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City, according to Telegraph reporter Luke Edwards.
Talks between the two clubs have progressed, with a deal expected to be finalised and a framework already in place.
The 24-year-old Spaniard has become Newcastle’s top midfield target. Comfortable as a deep-lying playmaker or a dynamic box-to-box presence, Gonzalez possesses the physicality and technical skill set to thrive under Matthias Jaissle.
For Manchester City, sanctioning Gonzalez’s departure is part of a wider midfield overhaul.
With intense competition for places at the Etihad Stadium, Gonzalez has struggled for regular opportunities in recent months and for long spells of his City career since joining from Porto in February 2025.
The signings of Elliot Anderson and the imminent arrival of Ayyoub Bouaddi will further reduce Gonzalez’s chances of playing time, making his desire for a summer move unsurprising.
Newcastle see Gonzalez as a high-value addition who brings proven top-level experience.
With all parties pushing for a resolution, talks are now entering the final stages as Newcastle look to finalise the deal.
Letting Gonzalez leave would free up funds and squad space for City to pursue another midfield signing.
City remain interested in Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and could table a bid, despite the Blues’ transfer deadline for their star midfielder having already passed on August 14.
Meanwhile, Newcastle are expected to pursue further targets before the transfer window closes.
The Magpies were in the race for Christopher Nkunku, but he is now set to rejoin RB Leipzig from AC Milan.
Despite a turbulent pre-season, Jaissle’s side came close to a win over Liverpool in Sunday’s PL opener, only to be denied by a stoppage-time penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai.
