Newcastle United appear set to miss out on Christopher Nkunku, with the French forward keen on a return to RB Leipzig, according to transfer reporter Luca Bendoni.

Nkunku was excluded from Milan’s first-team squad and stripped of his shirt number ahead of the new season, just a year after his €37 million move from Chelsea.

Newcastle had identified the versatile 28-year-old as a marquee attacking target and joined the race for his signature.

However, Nkunku’s clear preference for a return to the Red Bull Arena has left the Magpies on the verge of missing out.

Negotiations between RB Leipzig and AC Milan are advanced over an initial loan with an option to buy. The total package is expected to be worth around €35m.

Although Milan initially wanted a permanent deal, the Rossoneri have softened their stance to facilitate Nkunku’s exit with a loan-to-buy arrangement.

Nkunku enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career at Leipzig from 2019 to 2023. He scored 70 goals and provided 45 assists in 172 appearances, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous attackers.

After struggling to replicate that level of consistency during his spells at Chelsea and AC Milan, a return to Saxony is seen as the ideal move to revive his career.

While other European clubs remain on alert in case negotiations collapse, Leipzig have taken a commanding lead. Unless there is a late twist, Nkunku is expected to complete his return to the Bundesliga.

With 10 days remaining before the transfer deadline, Newcastle must quickly pivot to alternative targets in their search for attacking additions.

The Magpies are also targeting midfield reinforcements, with Nico Gonzalez currently top of their shortlist.
