Newcastle United have been hit by a major setback, with the Swedish FA confirming Anthony Elanga will miss the upcoming international break through injury.
The 24-year-old, who has started the campaign brightly, was left out of the squad after suffering an injury in the past week, ruling him out of meetings with Romania, Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the UEFA Nations League.
Magpies head coach Matthias Jaissle voiced concern after the 4-1 defeat at Leeds, calling the early diagnosis worrying. He said the winger is struggling, further assessment is needed and another MRI is planned next week. Jaissle warned it could be long term, while stressing they hope it is not and want him back quickly.
With Elanga, Isak Hien and Jacob Widell Zetterstrom sidelined, Graham Potter has named an enlarged squad to spread the load. He has also left out veteran keeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt, preferring younger options Melker Ellborg and Noel Tornqvist as he looks to build for the future.
Sweden are in Division B alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland and Romania. They face Romania in Stockholm on 25 September, then host Poland three days later. Despite injuries, Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres are expected to lead the line, as Potter balances development with winning.
